Object description :

"Charles Alexandre Bertier (1860-1924), Grenoble: "snow Effect", Oil On Canvas"
Charles Alexandre BERTIER (1860-1924), Grenoble: "Snow effect", Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dimensions: 33 x 46 cm Charles Bertier, born October 1, 1860 in Grenoble2, died in the same city on July 26, 1924, is a French landscape painter. The same subject is exhibited at the Hébert Museum in La Troche near Grenoble.
Biography Born into a family of glovers, Charles Bertier entered the Petit Séminaire du Rondeau, in the suburbs of Grenoble, where he took drawing lessons from Father Laurent Guétal3 from whom he learned the rigor of composition. This influences the choice of his subjects: river banks, forests and mountains. Both are members of the Dauphinoise School which includes, among others, Ernest Victor Hareux and Jean Achard. They were sometimes called the “Dauphinois landscapers”. Charles Bertier entered Mr. Hauquelin's professional school in 1875, the future École Vaucanson, in order to learn about mechanics, which interested him as much as drawing. He was admitted to the Paris School of Fine Arts where he met his compatriot Jean-Alexis Achard. He exhibited several times at the Salon, notably in 1894 where his Vallée du Vénéon au plan du Lac (Grenoble museum) received an honorable mention4. In 1900, he painted a Sunset on the Belledonne chain for the restaurant Le Train bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. His painting, The Thaw of Lake Eychauda is a tribute to his master Guétal. Holder of 31 awards, in France and abroad, he is a member of the Society of French Artists, founding member of the Society of Mountain Painters and member of several juries. His workshop, located at 31 route d'Eybens, in the Exposition-Bajatière district, was destroyed in 1913 by a fire; nothing remained of his works (drawings, paintings and manuscripts) which were stored there. He resumed his work by painting the massifs of Oisans, Switzerland and Mont-Blanc, in order to exhibit at the Salons of Paris, Grenoble and Lyon until his death which occurred on July 26, 1924. He was buried at the Saint-Roch cemetery in Grenoble. Public collections ceiling of the large room of the restaurant Le Train bleu, Paris, Gare de Lyon.
