"An Actress In Louis XIII Costume By Adrien Marie "
Interesting watercolor, framed in the period, by Adrien Marie, representing an actress, disguised as a man, in a Louis XIII costume. Adrien Marie is an illustrator, born in 1848, educated by Cabasson, Pannemeker, then Isidore Pils. He began by selling drawings to L'illustration, and became a cartoonist reporter for this famous magazine (which caused his death in 1891 upon returning from an expedition to Africa that he was covering). He illustrates numerous works (Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Daudet's Letters from My Moulins) for the biggest publishing houses of the time, Hachette, Hetzel and many others. For illustration purposes, he covers Parisian shows and during the creation of Offenbach's Doctor Ox met Anna Juddic, a famous singer from the Théâtre des Variétés. It could well be a portrait of this artist in stage costume, in fact Nadar's photo shows similar features. The frame has never been opened, it is in perfect original condition.
