Object description :

"César Baldaccini Dit César (1921-1998) Bronze Medallion For The Grande Masse 1953 + Poster. "
Rare bronze token or medallion of César Baldaccini known as César noted on the back 3 p 15 (probably No. 3 out of 15 because probably 15 copies were produced) + poster from 1953. It is therefore a bronze medallion of César created in 1953 for the Grande Masse Festival committee, César made this token for the members of the committee, its theme was "Expo 1900, African pavilion" hence the subject of this sculpture representing an African mask. I am attaching to this bronze a poster from the same period, Paris Games, Gala of the School of Fine Arts. This token measures 8.5x8 cm excluding frame and the poster, both framed and in good condition. César Baldaccini, known as César, was born in 1921 in Marseille. Coming from a modest family, he left school at 12, began working and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille in 1935 then the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1943. For financial reasons, César cannot work with stone and devotes himself to other materials such as iron and plaster. The discovery of arc welding offered him new possibilities for construction using scrap metal which actually came from landfills in the early days. From 1954, he exhibited and obtained recognition, notably from the State which bought [L'Sturgeon] from him for the National Museum of Modern Art. His best-known works are called Compressions and are composed of assemblies of various materials: sheet metal, paper, even jewelry... Mirroring these Compressions, César began offering Expansions made in polyurethane from 1967, in the form of castings. smooth and solid. Among his works passed down to posterity we can still cite Le Pouce monumental, Le Centaur homage to Picasso and of course the César du cinéma designed in 1975. César died in 1998.
