Sculpture 15/16th Virgin And Child In Majesty In Polychrome Stone - France flag

Object description :

"Sculpture 15/16th Virgin And Child In Majesty In Polychrome Stone - France"
Pretty Virgin in Limestone which still retains traces of Polychromy and which can be placed in relation to the style of Scultural work between the 15th and 16th century in France.
Dressed in a long draped dress covering her arms and falling in front of her legs, bridged with gothic beaked or rolling pleats with a Trapezoid neckline. Wearing a crown (having lost its fleur-de-lis embroidery on the top certainly during or after the revolution) Placed on slightly wavy hair and adopting a solemn position on the Throne, Designating the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven.
But she also represents the Mother of Jesus, She through whom the mystery of the incarnation is accomplished, She offers to the Adoration of the Faithful her Son Jesus, whom she holds affectionately on her knees.
In a seated position in majesty slightly turned towards Jesus, both holding in their hands (which meet) a sphere symbolizing the World.
the Child Jesus is represented in Movement seeming animated by a desire to move in the direction of the Faithful too.
This posture of the virgin presenting herself as maternal with her head slightly leaning towards the Child Jesus with a very slight smile on her lips and the Child himself in movement demonstrates a more hieratic way of sculpting than during the centuries preceding and announcing the Renaissance. More Refined and Mannerist.
This type of representation centered on the Relationship of Mary with her Son Jesus is not new, it first developed in Byzantine art from the Council of Ephesus in 431 where Mary was recognized as the Mother of God, Then it spread in the West later, especially from the 12th century. he became one of the most widespread religious subjects of the last century of the Middle Ages. In the West, this veneration for the virgin coincides with the development of courtly literature which largely honors women.

- Fixing hole and remains of fixing plaster on the back, Missing the fleur-de-lis on the crown (certainly removed during the revolution) Missing the left arm of the Child Jesus. slight chips on the back of the set on the left side too, which leads us to believe perhaps that it was torn off and dropped on the left side during wars or revolts. then recover and save and again amputate the fleur-de-lys to the revolution.
