Inscription in Latin at the top right, the translation of which is: aged 59 years, year 1626.
Oil on canvas 92x73.
Later gilded frame 104x84, with old cartouche attributing to Jan van Goyen
(painting recently cleaned, stretched canvas)

Our painting is a direct descendant of the ceremonial portrait of Henry IV in black coat, produced in 1610 by Frans Pourbus and preserved at the Louvre Museum, same pause in black dress in Huguenot fashion, same hand placed on the corner of the table and, in the background, a similar heavy green fabric.

Frans Pourbus known as the Younger, born in Antwerp around 1569-1570, was called to Paris by the sister of Marie de Medici. He came for the first time for a brief stay on the occasion of the baptism of Louis XIII in 1606, then settled permanently in Paris from September 1609. In 1618, an annual pension was allocated to him as “painter to the king » and, the same year, was naturalized French. He died in Paris in 1622
