Object description :

"Gaius Octavus Or Young Augustus, Superb Bust In White Marble Circa 1830"
Large Bust Of The Young Emperor Augustus In White Carrara Marble From The Early 19th Century.

probably a very nice souvenir made for travelers on the grand tour.
Large bust of Caesar Augustus in Carrara marble, dating from the beginning of the 19th century.
very beautiful bust of the emperor, very finely sculpted with a beautiful male face based on the ancient sculptures of this famous sovereign.
the sculpture is of superb quality in a beautiful Carrara marble of high quality with a very fine grain, the small grayish spot appearing on the front is a vein in the marble.
beautiful old patina.
This bust rests on its marble pedestal.
an accident to the right ear to report, the piece was glued back on but over time the collage has darkened a little.
Possibility of having the restoration done on the ear in the workshop which would make this little old collage almost invisible.
a bust of great beauty, entirely in the spirit of the antique Italians in the papal collections.

We therefore see here a bust portrait of Julius Caesar's young nephew who later adopted him, changing his name to Caesar Octavian Augustus. Almost all neoclassical sculptures had a model and ours is among the most illustrious:
it is a replica of an original work representing the so-called young Octavian, from the Augustan era, dating from the end of the 1st century BC.
as evidenced by the portrait from the Julio-Claudian period, sold by the famous Roman sculptor Vincenzo Pacetti (Rome 1746-1820) to the Vatican Museums (inv 714) exhibited at the Pio Clementino Museum.

Everything refers to the portrait of the Augustan era: from the design of the hair, with the locks in the central dovetail part, the spacious forehead, the look to the posture.

The bust therefore represents the young Octavian (later Augustus Caesar) probably around the years preceding the death of his adoptive father Julius Caesar.
The numerous harmonious details are of great mastery, the sculptor was able to give his sculpted model a superb face conveying to the character the tenderness and determination of the young man to later become the first emperor of Rome.

our Large sculpted white Carrara marble bust representing young Augustus, based on the antique bust in the Galleria dei Busti of the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican (n° 714).
