The nagajuban is an elegant traditional Japanese garment and underwear, designed to be worn under the kimono or as an interior jacket.
Often it is a white cotton robe which serves as a barrier between the skin and the kimono, thus providing effective protection against wear and perspiration on the traditional Japanese kimono for men.
Easy to maintain, nagajuban offers a practical solution. It is important to note that this underwear is specifically intended to be worn under a kimono, not a yukata.

In elegant, very popular, luxurious Tsumugi (silk pongee).
They are part of the category of so-called "woven" nagajuban and kimonos (orimono), which implies that the silk thread has been dyed before being woven (there are, however, exceptions), unlike nagajuban and kimonos made by hand. made from a white fabric and dyed afterwards (komon, hômongi...).
The patterns emerge in uninterrupted continuity by the seams.
Fans of this type of fabric are true connoisseurs.
During the Edo period (1603-1867), the different social classes were subject to severe rules, even in the way they dressed. Indeed, silk was reserved for the nobility and warriors.
However, silk farmers began to manufacture fabrics for their own use from medium quality silk threads, which were impossible to market.
These fabrics which revealed irregularities on their surface and which in no way resembled silk (but rather cotton) were then very prized by the lower classes (merchants, bourgeois) who, thanks to this ingenuity, then had the possibility of wearing in complete peace a material which was forbidden to them.
