"Young Woman Making An Offering To Love - After A. Roslin - Dumont - C. 1880."
Rectangular miniature on ivory representing a young woman making an offering of a flower garland to the god Love after the famous painting by Alexandre Roslin (preserved at the Louvre Museum). The identification of the model with the artist's eldest daughter, Augustine-Suzanne Roslin (born in 1760, married in 1780 to Louis Carteron de Barmont), who would have served as a model for Roslin by reminding him of the memory of his own wife, disappeared in 1772, with which it bore a great resemblance. An elegant young woman, like a priestess in a modern but fancy costume, offers flowers to the statue of Love (inspired by the famous sculpture by Falconet, see the 1757 marble preserved in the Louvre), the object of her love appearing, on the left, in the portrait of a young man (in “Spanish” costume) placed on a gilded wooden console. Our work presents exceptional quality in its details and technique. It is signed lower right Dumont. It has its original wooden frame veneered with burl wood. Work from the end of 19th century. Miniature dimensions: 10 cmx 8 cm
