Object description :

"18th Century Indo-portuguese Box/cabinet"
- Rectangular in shape, our cabinet opens on the front with a flap fitted with a lock, revealing six drawers arranged in three rows. This cabinet is topped with four small feet to allow the lid to be fully opened.

- All its exterior and interior faces are covered with abundant marquetry decoration of exotic woods and bones. The drawer sockets are also made of bone. The decoration of the exterior faces is organized in a succession of concentric frames delimited by listels. The exterior frame is decorated with painted motifs on a green background, while a chevron marquetry with reserve is displayed in the second interior frame. In the center, a rectangle houses a semi-geometric pattern of flowers. The faces of the interior drawers include some of these elements such as the painted green frame and the flower seedlings. The painted decoration of the flap is a simulated marquetry to echo the entire ornamental vocabulary deployed on the interior and exterior faces of the cabinet.

- In addition to the marquetry decoration, the very small dimensions of this box add to its preciousness. Small handles located on the sides indicate the mobile nature to which this box was intended.

- As it stands, restorations should be noted (marquetry simulated in places with green or white paint).

- Our firm is involved in Indo-Portuguese productions. These are cabinets made in India, under Portuguese protection. These small travel cabinets were elements of portable furniture very popular with 18th century Europeans established in India because their multiple drawers made it possible to accommodate personal effects or small precious objects such as jewelry.
