" Simon Horsin-déon. Bacchic Gaiety Painting On Panel"
Painting on panel. Bachic Gaîté. Simon Horsin-Déon Art historian, expert painter and merchant, Simon Horsin-Déon (1812-1882) was one of the winners of the restorers' competition launched by the Louvre in 1848. he was also the first Frenchman to publish a treatise on the art of restoration, entitled On the conservation and restoration of paintings (1851), which had more success abroad than in his own country. Despite his title as restorer of the Imperial Museums, Horsin-Déon rarely worked for the Louvre, undoubtedly because of the criticisms he had expressed, in his treatise and other writings, on the working methods of Frédéric Villot, curator of paintings at the Museum. However, when in 1860, most French specialists and journalists attacked Villot for cleaning the paintings in the Museum, Horsin-Déon gave him his support, even if for him it was mainly a question of defending the profession of restorer. His numerous publications on collecting and the trade in paintings are very useful for the study of the art market in France in the mid-19th century. dimensions: width: 41cm (25cm) height 35.5cm (20cm)
