Beautiful work by the Marseille painter Joseph Suchet which represents a shepherd and his flock at the foot of a mill in the vicinity of Marseille, most certainly in Rognac.
Specialist in marine life, the artist Joseph Suchet offers us here a rare bucolic scene from the Marseille countryside. Son of a sailor and student of Emile Loubon at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Marseille, he exhibited from 1857 to 1879 at the Paris Salon.
He specializes in marine painting which represents fishing scenes in Marseille and its surroundings: Sausset, Bandol, ... in all weather and in all seasons.
He adheres to local artistic life in Marseillaise by participating in various exhibitions and by being an active member of the Artistic Circle, created by his friend and patron Jules Charles-Roux.
These works are kept in different museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille and the Museum of Fine Arts in Toulon.
Dimensions: 42 x 74 cm without frame and 72 x 104 cm with its imposing original gilded wood frame.
