Large Half-Hump Amulet Figuring A Chameleon seen in profile, standing on four short legs, with a hemmed tail, eyes dotted and circled, the body incised in small chequered patterns.   
Gan culture, south-west Burkina Faso, 19th century   
Copper alloy   
H. 9.5 cm, length 24 cm  
 
These amulets refer to the plastic expression of the Torfan. The Torfan is a spiritual entity that can take many forms, such as a snake, tortoise, chameleon, panther or caiman. Its representations can vary, and fetishes can have from one to ten heads.   
A protective figure, it keeps evil spirits away from people and livestock, and favours harvests and hunting.
