Portrait Of An Arab By Hans Canon (austrian, 1829-1885), Attr.to

Due to the identical style, composition and comparison with other works by the same artist, we have attributed this oriental portrait to the hand of our famous Austrian genre and portrait painter Hans Canon (1829 -1885). For comparison, see an additional image of other Canon works in our collection. In 1845, Canon became a student at the Vienna Academy and studied under Georg Waldmueller and Carl Rahl. The artist undertook several trips to England, France, Italy and the Orient. In 1860 and 1863-69 Canon lived and taught in Karlsruhe. From 1869 to 1874 he worked in Stuttgart and later in Vienna. In 1877 Canon received the Carl Ludwig Medal, in 1882 the Great State Gold Medal, and in 1883 the Reichel Prize. Since 1861, Canon was a member of the Vienna Artists' Unit. Canon's works can be found in the National Museum in Vienna as well as the Leopold Museum.
