Beautiful pastel by the Avignon painter Claude Firmin-Goy which represents the profile portrait of his painter friend: Etienne Cornellier (1837-1902).
The artist was able to perfectly transcribe the facial features of his friend.

Etienne Cornellier is a painter from Marseille , student of Victor Dupré and Jean-Baptiste Olive, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1882 to 1898. He worked extensively in Normandy, Brittany and Fontainebleau before devoting himself to Marseille and its region.
As a decorative painter, he worked on the construction sites of the Sacré Coeur de Montmartre, the buffet at the Gare de Lyon, the winter circus and the Monaco pavilion for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
He was also the author of the sets for the premiere of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand in 1897.

Claude Firmin is described by critics as one of the best Avignon landscapers "with paintings of superior execution which ignore the violence of contrasts and are enveloped in a seductive harmony of color " ; But also, as a painter with exceptional talent, “mainly by his quality of vision: qualities which require a natural feeling of light, perfected by extensive experience”.

A student of Pierre Grivolas, Léon Bonnat and Paul Saïn, he appeared at the Salon des Artistes français from 1889 to 1922 and at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants from 1906 to 1910 where he obtained numerous awards for his participation.
At the same time, he attended exhibitions in Avignon from 1882 to 1944, including that of the Group of Thirteen to which he belonged.
In 1922, he became a professor and then director from 1937 to 1941 of the School of Fine Arts in the City of Avignon.
He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1937.

Dimensions: 64 x 47 cm in frame view and 55 x 73 cm with its original gilded wood frame.
