"Guanyin With The Fo Dog, China, Qing Dynasty, 17th-18th Century, Polychrome Wood. "
The sculpture depicts Guanyin (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) with his dog Foo (also known as the Buddhist Lion). Guanyin is the bodhisattva who embodies compassion, his name meaning "observing sounds", that is, listening to requests. The goddess is accompanied by the dog Foo, guardian of Buddhist temples and companion of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni. The wooden sculpture is covered with a thick polychrome, composed of red and black lacquer, gilding and relief decorations. Depictions of Guanyin with a lion have been popular in China since the Yuan dynasty, with artists creating both small bronze and porcelain sculptures and monumental wooden figures depicting the subject.
