Hippolyte Benjamin ADAM Paris, 1808 – 1853 Oil on canvas 54 x 73 cm (61 x 80 cm with the frame) Signed lower left “h. Adam » 19th century black wooden frame Hippolyte Adam is a painter of genre scenes, seascapes and portraits with academic training. who was a student of Langlois and Paul Delaroche. He probably also visited Eugène Isabey's workshop. He exhibited during the Romantic period at the Paris Salon between 1833 and 1841 (“Les Reîtres”, “The Chartreux in Prayer”, “Fish Market in Marseille”, “La Récréation”....). His seascapes are very beautiful, with lots of movement, beautiful sea colors and many picturesque details, like in our painting. In rough seas, a sailing boat tows another sailing boat in distress while in the distance a steamboat calmly passes by!
