"Small Travel Clock In Gilt Bronze, Empire Period - Early 19th Century"
Charming gilded bronze pendulum with slightly rounded edges, the front of which is decorated with floral compositions in relief. This clock rests on small frilled spinning top feet. In the center, we discover an enameled dial surrounded by a chiseled bronze rim. Two slightly moving openwork hands. The upper part of the clock, in the shape of a semicircle, is engraved with laurel leaves, a large knot and an inscription: “To Cythera”. Above, a bird with outstretched wings holds mail in its beak. On the sides we find a cherub, finger pointing towards the sky, his arne held firmly in his hand. Finally, a standing dog turning towards the angel also holds a letter. “To Cythera”: “To go to Cythera” or “To embark for Cythera” is a poetic expression which means “to fall in love”, with a feeling of newness, of the first time. Indeed, when we discover the island of Kythera, we better understand this beautiful expression which designates the beginning of a delicious journey, rich in promises. Aphrodite, goddess of Love and Beauty, was born on the shores of Cythera. ******** Period: Late 19th Century Excellent condition.
