"Nancy Wax, 18th Century"
The art of wax sculpture is at its peak in Lorraine as evidenced by this Virgin and Child in its original box, decorated with delightful dominotier paper. She is a very young woman whose modeling is perfect, both the youthful face and the hands (one finger is missing). His costume is neat, the tight fit with small pleats is in the fashion of the Louis XV period (accident on the silk sleeves). Her child has the head of a baby doll, swaddled like back then. The headdress is lined with gold lace as are other parts of the costume. The condition of the wax is perfect, more resistant than the textile of the costume, during the long life of this object which was placed near those giving birth and we can notice that no religious sign is present…. The period frame is gilded with gold leaf (a small restoration at the top). 18th century period.
