Represents a young woman in a bourgeois interior. She sits tenderly looking at a dog next to a jewelry box and a bouquet of flowers placed on a table. This metaphorical composition can be understood as a vanitas in the tradition of Flemish still lifes from the 17th century. Panel (mahogany). Signed 'P.Knarren.' lower right. The presence of the dog illustrates fidelity, the silk drapes as well as the jewelry box symbolize lust. A letter protrudes from the box interpretable as a sweet word, an idea reinforced by the presence of flowers symbolizing the ephemerality of beauty, youth and love. Likewise the Japanese porcelain vase with imari decoration, a very common subject of Flemish vanitas from the 17th century, is also a symbol of this fragility The posture of the lady through her gaze as well as the curling of the fingers recall a form of gentleness. Many other symbols are hidden in this painting with its complex composition.
