Jean Cocteau was a French writer, poet, playwright, filmmaker and artist, born on July 5, 1889 in Maisons-Laffitte and died on October 11, 1963 in Milly-la-Forêt. He was an emblematic figure on the 20th-century French art scene. Cocteau is known for his artistic versatility, eclectic style and influence in theater, literature, film and the visual arts.
Born into a bourgeois family, Cocteau showed an early interest in art and literature. He began writing poetry at a young age, publishing his first collection, "La Lampe d'Aladin", at just 19 in 1909. His artistic career was marked by collaborations with other renowned artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie.
In the 1910s and 1920s, Cocteau was at the heart of Parisian cultural life, frequenting the artistic and literary circles of Montparnasse and Montmartre. He was associated with the Surrealist movement, although he eventually developed his own distinct style, blending realism and fantasy.
