This large carved and partially polychromed wooden statue is a French work from the Auvergne region, dating from the beginning of the 16th century.
It represents the Pope, wearing the pontifical tiara with triple crown. The gesture of the papal blessing is very powerful by the strong presence of the right hand, the 3 fingers raised, symbol of the Holy Trinity.
In his left hand, he holds the Book. His clothes have the characteristics of Gothic with the marked folds and the shape of the ends of the shoes.
The slender, hairless face, with finely defined lips, eyes downward, describes a calm, composed attitude.
