Object description :

"Christophe Fratin (1801-1864) Pair Of Bronze Cups With Bears"
Christophe FRATIN (1801 - 1864)
Pair of bronze cups called "bear cups" with brown patina. The barrels represent acrobatic bears perched on a base decorated with elephant heads. The hollows of the cups are decorated with eagles confronting a serpent. This duality between the eagle and the serpent symbolizes the struggle between good and righteousness through the eagle and evil or sin represented by the serpent. This symbolism is illustrated in the Bible but also by the legend of Tenochtitlan taken up today on the emblems of Mexico.
