Round solid silver plaquette, Bust of Christ & Crucifixion, 17th century
This plaquette shows on its obverse a left profile of Christ crowned by a radiating halo. On the edge: "EGO SVM VIA VERITAS ET VITA" (I am the Way, the Truth and the Life) surrounded by two leaves (the relief of one of the two leaves and of the A of VITA are hardly discernible). This kind of bust of Christ is a widely circulated model on Renaissance medals. It is attributed to an anonymous artist after busts of Christ initiated by medal maker Giovanni de Rossi (1513-1575).
The reverse depicts a Crucifixion that is a composition made after an intaglio created by Giovanni Bernardi (1493-1553), and kept at the Cabinet des Médailles (ref. reg.H.2964). This intaglio is part of a set of nine, made of rock crystal, representing scenes of the Passion of Christ, executed for Alessandro Farnese.
Excellent conditon, a fixing hole on the top. No hallmarks.
