Object description :

"Bronze Candlesticks From The Empire Period Said "return From Egypt" Early 19th Century."
Pair of gilded bronze candlesticks from the Empire period known as "return from Egypt" Early 19th Century.
The shaft is carried by caryatids, an Egyptian head surmounts the shaft and rests on griffin claws. This orientalist decor well represents the ambivalence between the Orient, mythology and antiquity which punctuated European thought at the end of the 18th century. This piece was produced following Napoleon's conquests in Egypt, spreading this taste of the Orient. This type of very rare piece is called "return from Egypt".
