Porcelain Portraits, Bronze And Enamel Frame. Alphonse Giroux. 19th Century. flag

Object description :

"Porcelain Portraits, Bronze And Enamel Frame. Alphonse Giroux. 19th Century. "
Pair of portraits on porcelain representing a man and a woman from the 17th century. It is most likely a portrait of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria. The two porcelain medallions are set in a bronze scrolled frame. Each frame is decorated with sky blue and royal blue champlevé enamel interlacing. These interlacing patterns are reminiscent of the marquetry patterns of Charles-André Boulle. Each portrait is enhanced with a red glass element mounted as a cabochon. Above each frame, a laurel garland frames an escutcheon engraved with the number F. This pair of frames is characteristic of the historical style which developed during the Second Empire. Circa 1850-1860.

The frames are signed by Alphonse Giroux. The Alphonse Giroux et Cie carpentry and cabinetmaking store was located at 7 rue du Coq Saint-Honoré and lasted from the Consulate to the end of the Second French Empire. François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux created a shop at the end of the 18th century and during the Restoration in 1834 he became a cabinetmaker. He then became a supplier to the aristocracy as well as the royal entourage. Around 1837, he retired and entrusted his estate. This famous store exhibited at the Exhibition of Products of French Industry in 1839 and won a silver medal. They became suppliers to the Second Empire until 1867.
