Painted vellum sheet depicting a biblical scene "Rebekah and Eliezer"
50cm in diameter
Very good condition
The subject is taken from the Book of Genesis (24, 15-27): Eliezer of Damascus, servant of Abraham is sent by the latter to looking for a wife for his son Isaac. He is sent to Nahor in Chaldea and there asks God for help in choosing a wife. He decides to choose the one who will offer him and his camels a drink. In exchange, he offers Rebecca the jewelry given by Abraham: two bracelets and a ring, accompanied by the marriage proposal letter. Poussin decides to represent this last scene in his painting, a rare choice because artists generally choose the previous scene, where Eliezer drinks from Rebecca's spring. He also decided not to represent camels, although they always appear traditionally in paintings representing this subject, which will be the main subject discussed during the Academy debates around this painting.
