Lombardie Box In Louis XVI Marquetry flag

Object description :

"Lombardie Box In Louis XVI Marquetry"
Rare Lombard box in marquetry from the Louis XVI period. Last quarter 18th century. Italy, Lombardy. The top has a decoration called “the noble savages” made in marquetry of native and exotic woods. The sand-heated wood technique was used to create shade. The decoration consists of two dolphins or dragons, two characters dressed in leaf loincloths, leaf scrolls and fruit. The whole is topped with a basket of flowers. The four sides of the box are inlaid with eight landscape and factory scenes in ovals. The latter are surrounded by scrolling foliage on a magnifying glass background. Finally, a frame of four nets and a rosewood surround complete the decor. We can emphasize the great finesse of the work carried out in this marquetry. We can also compare this work to the famous cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini. The woods used are fir for the structure, walnut, rosewood, boxwood, lemon, stained sycamore maple, plum, cherry, amboyna, and certainly others... This box set opens on one side with a drawer fitted with a bronze button chiseled with a flower. It rests on four loaf feet. Buffer varnish finish. Dimensions: L 32.5 x D 23.5 x H 14.5
