Bust in porcelain biscuit and gilded bronze “Ophélie” signed M. Bouval. Height excluding base 32 cm, Total height 40 cm, width 25 cm Maurice Bouval is a French sculptor (1863-1916), student of Alexandre Falguière. Many of his creations are known, most of them romantic, classic and especially Art Nouveau. “Ophélie” is undoubtedly his major work, because it is the only one which expresses such symbolist force. The subject, taken from Hamlet by William Shakespeare, inspired several major artists such as Delacroix, Odilon Redon and many others. We especially think of the inspiration of the Pre-Raphaelites like John Everett Millais or John William Waterhouse. Our copy, through the contrast of materials, plunges us into a dreamlike universe that proofs entirely in patinated or gilded bronze cannot fully grasp. We found traces of a single example in bisque and gilded bronze in a Christie's sale in 1998. After our acquisition of this bust during the show "Affaire Conclue", bonus of June 20, 2023, we carried out a a thorough cleaning as well as a restoration of the gilding of the bronzes and had a stone base cut, missing when it was discovered.
