In Togo, African fetishes are used in beneficial or evil rituals, depending on the intentions of their owner. Witch doctors make them to order to confer protective and medicinal properties, but also offer ready-to-use versions. Although these practices are still ongoing today, they are sometimes criticized as being animistic and obsolete in the era of Christianization and Islamization. However, populations tend to maintain animist practices despite their conversion to the major monotheistic religions, the two beliefs influencing each other. The Ewe, often confused with the Minas, constitute the largest ethnic group in Togo. They are also present as minorities in Ghana, Benin, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. Although historical information on them is limited, it appears that their presence in their current location stems from invasions and conflicts that occurred in the 17th century.
