Coming from Eastern tradition, this iconography developed in Europe from the Crusades and intensified in the Christian West from the middle of the 14th century.
The theme is represented mainly in sculpture and painting and its iconographic characteristics are always intended to signify the physical dependence of Mary and Jesus on Anne. The representations thus adopt, and this is the case of our sculpture, an anti-naturalistic character where Mary is represented barely older than Jesus.
Abandoned at the beginning of the 16th century in France and Italy, this iconographic theme continued throughout the 17th century in the countries of the Holy Germanic Empire.
