"Esqiissr Representing A Theater Scene By Gustave Adolphe Mossa"
Interesting gouache sketch, by Gustave Adolphe Mossa, in a symbolist spirit, typical of his production before the first war, of an antique theater scene. It is a setting up of the setting and the characters, carried out with simplicity and efficiency. Gustave Adolphe Mossa, born and died in Nice (1883 -1971) is an extraordinary artist from the beginning of the century, whose symbolist painting explores the strangest impulses of human beings with rare strangeness and exceptional talent. His works cannot leave us indifferent, through the cruelty and humor they sometimes display. However, he stopped painting in this vein after the First World War, where he was seriously injured. He no longer exhibited them, and continued like his father to decorate the floats of the Nice carnival, and held his position at the city museum. We know that he created sets for the theater, and he also directed the plays. this sketch is signed in Gothic, which he will no longer do after the war (he will reject the German culture which had so fascinated him before this cataclysm). We will notice the half Cretan , half d'origine style of the columns of the decor, and the antique costumes of the two female characters. This is the time when Knossos fascinates minds with its character as a lost paradise. It's no wonder this inspired Mossa. drawing present in a 60s pass everywhere in raw silk. To be framed.
