The work is signed “Landau” at the bottom left. It is in excellent condition, clean and without restoration. It was produced during the artist's Provençal period, between 1939 and 1958.
The work is presented in a large wood and limed stucco frame. The frame is in excellent condition, despite some signs of use. On the back is the label of a framer from Nice, which suggests that the work was framed at the place of its creation.
The artist
Zygmunt Landau is a member of the School of Paris.
Born in Lodz in Poland in 1898, son and grandson of a rabbi, Landau arrived in Paris in 1920. He settled in La Ruche near Soutine, Krémègne and Kikoïne. He assiduously visited Parisian museums and admired Cézanne. In 1939, he took refuge in Saint Tropez and then adopted Provence, whose light profoundly influenced his work. Until the end of the 1950s, he lived between Nice and Paris and also exhibited in Stockholm and London. He then left for Israel, where he continued to paint, and died there in 1962.
Landau's painting is characterized by a palette of varied and saturated colors. He likes to paint the sweetness of life, peasant scenes and female portraits.
Landau's works are the subject of numerous public sales. Some of his works can be found in Polish museums.
