Enamel photograph on the front: Gold medal at the 1878 Universal Exhibition, Process Mathieu Deroche, 39 bd des Capucines, Paris 1880 signature: MD (Mathieu Deroche) The Bal notebook appeared around 1820 and allowed young girls to write down the names of riders who had invited them or with whom they wanted to dance. They become real objects of art, made of precious materials such as silver, ivory or mother-of-pearl. This notebook is made of tortoise shell with an enamel portrait of Mathieu Deroche inserted. Mathieu Deroche (1837-1937) miniaturist and photographer is best known for his portraits colored and transferred to enamel, a process that bears his name.
