"Beautiful French Cashmere Shawl With Large Green Reserve Circa 1845"
Circa 1845 Paris Very long French cashmere shawl probably from a Parisian factory and dating from the end of the Louis-Philippe period. Quarter-woven wool shawl, on a hand-cut loom. Large rectangular green reserve with central star and palmette spandrels decorated with illumination. Very fine weave in eight colors, characteristic of so-called rich shawls. Clever drawings of long cashmere palms and neo-Gothic interlacing superimposed giving a very complex visual effect with strong polychromy. The lines of the design are treated in an angular manner, known as Bâton Rompu, to accentuate the twill effect of the weave. Harlequin fringed edges on both ends. No moth holes or dirt. Exceptional state of color and conservation. Dimensions: 343cm x 158cm.
