Important Africanist or orientalizing painting by Jean Désiré Bascoules. It may represent the fantasized Algiers essay garden. In 1922, he obtained a scholarship from the Algerian government and moved to this country which would become his adopted homeland. In 1923, he won the Abd-el-Tif prize. He worked in several regions in Algeria, before settling permanently in Algiers where he produced numerous views of the city. He benefited from strong recognition during his lifetime and obtained numerous prizes and medals. For example, in 1930, he won the Algerian Artistic Grand Prize then, the following year, he obtained the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor for Arts and Letters.
