"Capriccio Architectural XVIIth Surroundings By Viviano Codazzi"
Spectacular architectural capriccio created in the 17th century in Italy, in the entourage of Viviano Codazzi (1604-1670). the capricci are works of fantasy where the artist brings together existing monuments on the canvas (like here the small round temple which is in Rome) and architectural elements according to his fantasy to balance his composition. Characters bring the places to life. Celli is clearly inspired by and contemporary with Viviano Codazzi, who practiced in Naples and Rome, and inspired many students during his lifetime, and opened the way for 18th century vedutists like Canaletto. He also created views of Rome at the request of the King of Spain, for the Buen Retiro. This large oil on canvas is in very good condition and requires no intervention. A black rod would be perfect to bring out the lines and architectural details.
