Some nobles (squires) exercised, with a princely privilege established by King René (County of Provence) in the middle of the 15th century, the profession of master glassmakers and to develop through the creation, production and distribution of glassware “à la Venice way”.
This prince of royal blood of immense culture and very refined tastes had brought back from Italy, of which he had been one of the princes (in Naples) for France, an important taste for glassware and glass manufacturing from the North of the Italy and Venice.
He wanted the same for the kingdom but obviously to encourage production in Provence. So he brought in some very good glassmakers from Altare and Venitia who settled from Marseille between Aix en Provence and Saint-Maximin. These masters and workers created and produced everything that luxury, bourgeois comfort, even religious buildings (stained glass) could discover and purchase.
The very white glass, the fern glass for example, resulting from their research were creations which spread as far as Germany.
Three families dominated this activity in the 17th and 18th century, including that of ESCRIVAN and beyond for one of them. Here is the portrait, treated in a simple manner, under Louis Born in 1708, married in 1761 to Madeleine Rose Sabatier, he was one of the sons of the noble glassmaker squire Bruno d'Escrivan and Dorothée de Martel, from a great line of noble glassmakers. He died in 1814 in Marseille.

Portrait in good condition on canvas, restored and back-placed on rigid cardboard at the beginning of the 20th century (1908).
