Originally from Clermont-Ferrand, this artist began his career in sculpture while studying from 1883 to 1887 at the Clermont School of Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1892 where he worked in sculpture but continued to study at the National School of Decorative Arts until 1896. After working as a designer for a jeweler Chadel developed a new graphic style by training in Japanese-style wood engraving technique with OA Issac. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts from 1905 until the end of his life. From 1926 to 1935 he was a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts. During his life he produced a large number of illustrations for publishers, writers and decorators. In the 1930s he worked particularly on movement, his drawings featured horsemen, animal races, dancers... Our battle scene drawing is a superb illustration of this period.
