The vaporous light and reflections in the water of the canals of Venice, harmonious colors, a subtle and dancing touch, gondolas and the timeless characters of the romantic city of the Doges for this work by the great Marseille painter Raymond Allègre. The work is produced in oil on canvas, it is offered in a magnificent and important Louis XV frame which measures 120 cm by 86 cm and 92 cm by 60 cm for the canvas alone. It represents a Venice canal animated with characters and Gondolas. In very good condition, only a few usual cracks, normal for a work of this format and period. It is signed lower right.

Painter of the landscapes of Provence and Venice, Raymond Allègre is also an orientalist painter. He is a student at the Marseille School of Fine Arts. He is the friend of Jean-Baptiste Olive. He continued his artistic training at the Paris School of Fine Arts in the workshops of Jean-Paul Laurens, Antoine Vollon and Léon Bonnat. He painted landscapes of the Paris region and Normandy from 1875. Raymond Allègre returned to Provence where he painted Martigues, Monaco and its surroundings. He exhibited at the Salon in Paris from 1880 to 1932. He won numerous prizes and the State bought paintings from him. He discovered Venice during a trip he made in 1900 and fell in love with this city which inspired a large number of paintings. In 1900, he participated, with his Algiers and Cassis panels, in the decoration of the restaurant Le Train bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. He was named knight of the Legion of Honor in 1903.
