"Mourning Sword In Steel Marcasite, France, Louis XVI Period, Circa 1760-1770"
Iron marcasite handle with a pretty uniform dark gray patina. The triangular blade is in very good condition with its identical marking on each side topped with scrolls. It is marked AUBRI Md fourbisseur au Roy de France & à la tête noire Pont St Michel A PARIS. Aubri, furnisher and merchant, is known to have made other quality civilian swords and hunting knives before the French Revolution. A beautiful example of a so-called court or – in this case – mourning sword, from the second half of the 18th century.
Very good condition, without sheath.
