Very beautiful black marble clock mounted on gilded bronze and topped with a patinated bronze sculpture representing the education of Paul and Virginie accompanied by one of their mothers and the dog Fidèle under a palm tree.The numerous finely sculpted gilded bronze decorations recall the lianas and vegetation of the Caribbean where the story of the tragic lovers takes place.
A huge literary success at the end of the 18th century, the novel by Jacques Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a source of inspiration for numerous painters and sculptors throughout the 19th century.
Work from the Napoleon III period in very good condition, the gilding and patinas are original.
