PICHET pewter baluster with flared foot, quarter-round goblet and thumbscrew with two buds.
Stamped property mark : ISB
Hallmark of Jean-Baptiste VARIN received master in 1700: crowned hammer / IBV / 1700.
City control hallmark : eagle with columns / (COMM)VN
Height: 21.4 cm.
BESANçON, First half of the 18th century


Good condition of conservation
These pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those which were used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal power or ecclesiastical to ensure “good measure” to the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was rarely applied and pitchers which bear gauge marks are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measurements would end up replacing the pitchers which presented, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinity of different gauges from one city to another and often even from one village to another, however close they may be. This significantly complicated the exchanges...
