Paris or Brussels circa 1810 - 1820
An important and fine openwork bowl, probably part of an ensemble, resting on a quadrangular base decorated with palmettes. Gilding on a pebbled background. The cup is flared, the underside decorated with foliage and held by a cherub. The gilding, glaze and biscuit alternate to great effect.
Charles Christophe Windisch, from the rue de la Roquette to the Manufacture Royale d'Ixelles
A talented draughtsman as well as a chemist, he was responsible for the preparatory drawing for this bowl and another that we will be offering for sale shortly. The white was most likely made in the family factory at 102 rue de la Roquette. The dating of the model is fairly precise: it may have been produced entirely in Paris after the 1810s or produced in Paris and then decorated in Brussels before 1830 and the break-up of the partnership between C C Windisch and Faber. In 1824, these two great names founded a highly talented factory in Ixelles, which soon won a royal privilege.
Notes :
Preparatory drawings in private hands (illustrated in the photos, taken from Michel Blois's book Trois siècles de porcelaine de Paris).
For a similar bowl, see the Demeuldre collection, successor to the Ixelles factory.
