Horseshoe-backed chairs (“quanyi”) were a symbol of power and status, used in ceremonies or reserved for important guests in the Chinese household. The curved back gives the chair its name and was generally made from 5 curved pieces of wood joined together by dowels. Period: Qing Dynasty (circa 1900).
