The Roman model for this sculpture is itself a copy of a Hellenistic work now ost. The Roman work (now in the Prado Museum) was discovered in 1675 during an archaeological excavation in Rome. Louis Desprez, who was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1826, was able to reproduce the work during his stay in Italy.
It was also carved by Soldani, Clodion, Charles-Jules Ingé, Pierre Lepautre, etc.
Condition: perfect. Note a trace of oxidation on the back.
