"Gallé; Clichy…? Germany ? (to Be Attributed): Five Tea Cups, Enameled Glass, 19th Century."
OBJECT TO IDENTIFY: ÉMILE GALLÉ? CLICHY crystalworks? SÈVRES glassworks; Auguste JEAN...? GERMANY ? ... Interesting and curious set of five TEA CUPS (x 5) of cylindrical shape, in blown and ribbed glass, decorated with a light azure blue tint in the mass, with polychrome enameled decoration and raised gold with various motifs , such as flowers in the Art Nouveau style, or, in the center of each, large monogrammed initials (a “C” and a “D”). On the periphery of the base and the rim of each, a fancy enameled frieze, highlighted in gold. Colors and patterns vary depending on the glass (red, brown, pink, yellow...). The glasses are made in an artisanal manner, mouth-blown and hot-worked with tools, decorated with Venetian ribs then painted by hand. Trace of the pontil, carefully ground, on the reverse of the base of the glasses. This series of glass is, indeed, both curious and interesting: they do not bear a signature, and it seems very complex to find an origin for them; to link them to an artist, to attribute them to this or that factory. The style is sometimes naive (friezes, lines), sometimes Art Nouveau inspired (floral motifs). We find both technique (blown glass, ribbed, gilded, enameled, etc.), and, at the same time, a certain simplicity in the features. These glasses, given the fact that they are monogrammed, were probably produced for a large family. Is this work French, or foreign? One would be tempted to say that it resembles, in certain ways, the work of Émile Gallé Nancy (first period). But these glasses are not signed. We find some "markers" of the Gallé style (flowers, tinted enameled ribbed glass), although without certainty. We could also think of artists such as Auguste Jean or the factories of Clichy, Sèvres or even Vallérysthal; Eugene Rousseau perhaps? In each case there are common points, but always without certainty. Final points: these glasses are old, and must date from the second half of the 19th century, probably around 1870. This remains, technically, a beautiful and accomplished work, in addition to being rare. Old tea cups are always quite rare, especially in this shape. It is therefore a beautiful and rare series of glasses, which remain in style and recall the style of Émile Gallé (19th century). DIMENSIONS: - height of a glass, 09.00 CM; - diameter at the rim, 06.00 CM. CONDITION REPORT: - in places and on certain glasses, the gilding or painting is very slightly altered (tiny losses of gold). It is nevertheless very weak and really not very marked, without much impact. This is practically not noticed and does not alter the cups in any way; - possible presence of minimal scratches on the reverse of the base, not visible and without any impact here again; Overall, the glasses are in excellent condition, they are perfectly preserved, with the exception of one of them (red glass), which has a shock at the rim. This shock is characterized by a chip at the base then a crack. The other four glasses are therefore intact, without damage, in excellent condition, without chips or shocks, without missing or accident.
