"Portrait Of A Notable, Signed D. Philippe 1842. Oil On Canvas. Louis-philippe Period. 19th C."
Portrait of a notable and posing in three quarters seated on a red "Voltaire" armchair characteristic of the Louis-Philippe I era (1830-1848), the "bourgeois king" and promoter of industrial advances. This bourgeois wearing the habit and posing certainly is entirely characteristic of this industrial elite, some of whom founded real family dynasties and who flourished a little later, under the Second Empire (1852-1870). The portrait is signed lower right D. Philippe 1842 ("flagship" year for Louis-Philippe who won the legislative elections behind his conservative minister François Guizot during this phase of the July Monarchy). Re-canvassed. Good condition.
