Robert Le Lorrain is the son of a family attached to Nicolas Fouquet. Following the disgrace of the family protector, he entered the workshop of Pierre Mosnier1 student of Lemonnier, then of François Girardon, he was responsible for executing part of the mausoleum of Cardinal Richelieu in the Chapelle de la Sorbonne in Paris .
In 1689, having won the Prix de Rome (grand prize for sculpture) with Noah's Embarkation, he left for Rome, where he studied the works of Bernini.
Back in France, he completed the works of Pierre Puget in Marseille.
At the very beginning of the 18th century, Robert Le Lorrain settled in Paris, in the Marais district, along rue Meslay, where he established his workshop, near that of Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain and his collaborator Jean-Baptiste Pigalle .
Robert Le Lorrain is received into the Academy of Saint-Luc.
In 1701, the creation of a statue of Galatea allowed him to become a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
He was subsequently appointed professor. Among his students, we count Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle.
Between 1728 and 1731, he developed works of art for the Château de Saverne and between 1735 and 1738 for the Palais des Rohan built for Armand-Gaston-Maximilien de Rohan, new prince-bishop of Strasbourg.
He created other sculptures for the Château de Marly and the Château de Versailles.
In 1737, he became rector of the Academy. During this year, he sculpted his most famous work: the bas-relief The Servants of Apollo giving water to the horses of the solar chariot, also known as The Horses of the Sun, for the tympanum of the entrance to the stables of the Hotel de Rohan in Paris in Paris.
Hubert Drouais: Son of Anne Talon and the painter Jean Drouais, Hubert was drawn by his taste into the same profession and received his first lessons from his father whom he left to study in Rouen then in Paris. During his trip to the capital, he was only able to pay for his trip with the money he earned on the road, he was so poor.
He was particularly devoted to portraiture, and was the best student of the portraitist François de Troy, who is linked through his master and Rigaud to the great tradition of Van Dyck.
He soon acquired a facility which made him considered one of the first painters of this genre.
As he made progress, he would visit his homeland, as if to pay homage to his early successes.
The paternal approval and encouragement of his compatriots were his sweetest reward.
He excelled in large portraits and in miniatures.
Although he shone in the different parts which characterize the good painter, the one which made him most admired was his fresh and brilliant color.
