Watson and the Shark, 18th century JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY (1738-1815) Large 18th century scene from Watson and the Shark, oil on metal, John Singleton Copley. Excellent quality and condition, late 18th century scene depicting a 14 year old English boy, Brook Watson, being attacked off the coast of Havana, Cuba while attempting to rescue him. Watson survived despite losing his leg and later became an MP and Mayor of London. Copley produced numerous versions of the work, of which this one is suggested, others include those held by the National Gallery Of Art in Washington and the Detroit Institute Of Arts.
