Portrait of Charles Dickens (1812-1870), dated 1840 by Daniel MACLISE (1806-1870) sales at $600,000 Large 1840 portrait of a young Charles Dickens, oil on canvas by Daniel Maclise. Important early portrait of a young Charles Dickens seated in a chair, depicted at mid-length, wearing a black suit with a white waistcoat and tie. Painted between the publications of Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop. Presented in its original antique gilded frame with title. Maclise painted several portraits of Dickens and his family, the most famous being the unabridged 1839 oil in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 1172), which served as a frontispiece for Nicholas Nickleby when it was first published later that year -there. He and the author were great friends, and Maclise contributed illustrations to The Old Curiosity Shop and several Christmas books: The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, and The Battle of Life.
